Choose the scope
Deleting an Apple Account affects the services and content tied to it. Deleting selected iCloud files or photos is a narrower job. Signing out of a device or removing an app does not delete the online account.
If your goal is simply to replace a phone, pause before choosing account deletion. Decide what you want removed and what must remain available on your other devices.
Before you start
If you want copies, use the iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive and iCloud Mail guides. Open saved files from a location that does not depend on the Apple Account you will close. A cloud placeholder is not a usable independent copy.
Review subscriptions, credit balances, purchased content, family arrangements and any apps using Sign in with Apple. Arrange alternative access where needed. Apple says active AppleCare plans must be addressed before account deletion. Sign out of devices as instructed before closure so you can still manage Find My and Activation Lock.
Use a contact method you will retain, particularly if your current email ends in iCloud.com. Keep account passwords and Apple's deletion access code private.
On a phone
- Open Apple's Data and Privacy portal in your browser.
- Sign in and confirm the exact Apple Account.
- Choose Request to delete your account.
- Review the consequences and complete Apple's verification and confirmation steps.
- Store the access code Apple supplies somewhere secure and independent of the account.
On a computer
Use the same Data and Privacy portal on Mac or Windows. Before submitting, check that the browser has the intended account rather than a family member's or work account.
Read Apple's account-deletion instructions alongside the request if you have device locks, purchases or family arrangements to resolve. The portal performs the deletion; saving a plan elsewhere does not.
Remove selected iCloud data instead
Sign in to iCloud or open the relevant app on a trusted device. Choose the files, photos, mail or other records you want to remove, inspect the selection and use that app's deletion controls. Read any recently-deleted or recovery options before clearing them.
Consider synchronization before acting. Removing a synced item may change what is available on your other devices. Make sure any copy you want to keep is stored separately, then check the specific app's result rather than treating all iCloud content as one collection.
What happens next
Apple verifies the request before completing account deletion. Once completed, it cannot restore the account or its data. Some transaction and other legally required records may remain. If you change your mind while the request is processing, contact Apple Support promptly with the private access code; do not assume a fixed cancellation period.
If something goes wrong
Use Apple Support for a blocked deletion, an account-access issue or a cancellation request. Do not submit another person's account because you share a device or family plan. Managed accounts and a deceased person's account need the relevant administrator or official specialist process.
Keep a record
Note the account, request date and outcome. Store the access code separately from general correspondence or screenshots shared with SEED. If you removed selected content instead, record the app and scope rather than marking the entire account deleted.
