Choose account deletion or a smaller cleanup
Permanent account deletion removes the selected Instagram profile and its associated content. Temporary deactivation has different effects. If you only want to remove a post or reduce visibility, use the relevant content/privacy control while keeping your account.
Check the username in every step. Disconnecting Instagram from Accounts Center or uninstalling the app is not the same as deleting the Instagram account.
Before you start
Follow the Instagram download guide if there is anything you want to keep. Open a few files from the finished archive before confirming deletion. You can continue without an archive if you prefer.
Review connected profiles, Threads, business assets and any sign-in relationship with other Meta services. Read the exact effect shown for your account instead of assuming that every connected profile has the same fate. Transfer necessary administrative access and deal with subscriptions separately.
On a phone
- Open Instagram and select the correct profile.
- Open the profile menu and the account/settings area, then Accounts Center.
- In the Accounts Center layout, open Personal details → Account ownership and control → Deactivation or deletion.
- Choose the Instagram account, select Delete account, and continue through the provider's review and identity checks.
- Save the confirmation and the last date on which you can cancel.
Some accounts now show Meta Account as Meta rolls out updated settings. If the route differs, open Instagram's official account-deletion instructions while signed in. Check that the final action applies to the intended Instagram profile.
On a computer
Sign in at Instagram. Open More → Settings, then the account-control area described above. Select the profile explicitly, even if the browser was already signed in.
If you are using a shared browser, close other people's sessions before beginning. Enter your password or verification code only on the official Instagram/Meta page. Opening the guide or creating a SEED plan does not submit the deletion.
Remove selected content while keeping the account
Use Your activity and the controls on individual posts to review content. Read each option: archive, hide, remove a tag and delete are different actions. Check any Recently deleted area before assuming a selected item has been permanently removed.
For a direct message or someone else's post, read the exact scope of the available removal/report option. A change to your own view does not guarantee that another person loses their copy. Save a record you need for a dispute before taking an irreversible action.
What happens next
Instagram commonly describes a period before permanent closure, but the available cancellation window can vary by region. Use the deadline in your own confirmation. Avoid signing back in to test deletion during that window without first reading the cancellation behavior.
A removed profile may still appear temporarily in search results. Copies outside Instagram, and records retained for a specific legal or security reason, are separate from the visible profile result.
If something goes wrong
If you cannot sign in, use Instagram's account recovery page. For a changed menu, follow the official help link above rather than choosing an unrelated Meta-wide deletion option. If a private record remains, identify its URL or category and use the relevant privacy/report route.
Keep a record
Save the username, action, confirmation date and cancellation deadline. Later record whether the account was reported deleted, the profile was no longer visible, or only selected content was removed. These are different outcomes.
