Understand the action
Deleting your WhatsApp account is different from uninstalling the app or unlinking a computer. Account deletion is performed from the primary device while signed in to the number concerned. It is not an action you can complete from a linked desktop session.
If you want to remove only a conversation or media from your device, use that narrower control and read its scope. Another participant's copy is a separate matter.
Before you start
Use the WhatsApp download guide for conversations and media you want to keep. Account-information reports and chat exports are different things; check the actual saved files. You can choose not to keep a copy.
Review groups and channels you administer. Arrange continuing administration if needed, and check any channel updates you want to remove before leaving. Consider what other participants or followers can still hold.
Keep another contact method available for important people and services. Verify a replacement email for SEED if any associated account is also being retired. Do not share WhatsApp registration or two-step-verification codes with a removal service.
On a phone
- Open WhatsApp on the primary phone and confirm the account's phone number.
- Open Settings. On Android this is available through the three-dot menu; on iPhone use the Settings area.
- Choose Account → Delete my account.
- Enter the number in full international format, including country code.
- Continue through the reason and confirmation screens, then confirm deletion only when the number and consequences are correct.
Use WhatsApp's current deletion instructions if your app shows different wording. Closing the guide or uninstalling the app before completing the confirmation does not submit this action.
On a computer
Use the computer to read the guide and check any wanted exports, then finish the account action on the primary phone. WhatsApp says linked devices cannot perform account deletion. Do not install an unofficial deletion tool or provide it with a phone login code to work around this requirement.
Check backups and channels
Review what the confirmation says about the account's backup. Separately inspect any copies you deliberately saved to a computer, another cloud account or external storage. Choose what to keep and what to remove from each location.
Channel ownership and previous updates have their own effects. Read the channel-specific information in WhatsApp's official help before deleting an administrator account. Removing the account does not guarantee that followers' existing copies disappear.
What happens next
The account action is irreversible. WhatsApp describes a deletion process that may take up to 90 days, with some backup and legal/security retention possible. Other people can retain messages you sent them. A contact's stale address-book view does not itself prove that deletion failed.
If something goes wrong
If you no longer control the phone number or primary device, use WhatsApp support. Explain the access problem without sending unnecessary chat content. Do not use inactivity as proof of completed deletion; use the official recovery/deactivation guidance appropriate to the account.
Keep a record
Save the phone number in a private form, date and confirmation. Record any separate backup or channel action as its own task. A prepared request or a linked-device sign-out should remain distinct from completed account deletion.
