Decide how much to remove
Choose account deletion when you want to leave the selected Facebook account. Deactivation is a pause with different effects. Removing a post, a tag or an app connection is a narrower action and does not close the account.
Check the profile name and picture throughout the process. A shared device, several profiles or a connected Instagram account can make it easy to act on the wrong one.
Before you start
Use the Facebook download guide if you want to keep photographs, messages or other records. Save and open the archive before continuing. Preserving a copy is optional and does not require a SEED vault.
Review any Page, group, business or advertising responsibility you manage. Arrange another authorized administrator where needed. Check subscriptions, outstanding payments and third-party services that use Facebook login; establish another sign-in for services you want to keep.
On a phone
- Open Facebook and switch to the account or profile you intend to remove.
- Open the app menu and Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Open Accounts Center. In the familiar layout, follow Personal details → Account ownership and control → Deactivation or deletion.
- Select the exact Facebook account/profile. Choose the deletion option, continue and review every affected service before the final confirmation.
Meta is updating Accounts Center to Meta Account, so some accounts show newer labels. If your screen differs, use Facebook's official deletion guide from your signed-in session and follow the controls for your selected account. Do not choose a wider Meta-account action just to get past a changed menu.
On a computer
Sign in at Facebook and open the profile menu, then Settings & privacy → Settings. Follow the account-control route above. Keep the official help page open in a second tab if the labels differ.
Before the last confirmation, compare the account shown with the one in your plan. Complete identity checks only on Facebook's own page. A request prepared in SEED does not itself close your Facebook account.
Remove selected content instead
Open Facebook's Activity log from your profile/settings and filter the content you want to review. Check whether each action deletes your content, moves it to a bin, removes a tag or only hides something from your profile. Content someone else posted may need a request to that person or Facebook's report/privacy route.
If a bin or recovery period is offered, read its terms before clearing it. Do not treat changing an audience or disconnecting an app as permanent deletion.
What happens next
Save the cancellation deadline and processing information Facebook displays for your request. If you change your mind, use its cancellation instructions within that window. Signing back in may affect a pending closure, so check the confirmation before doing so.
Closing your account does not erase screenshots or every message copy another person has. Search engines may also show an older result until they update. For a particular retained record, ask for the scope and reason rather than assuming all copies disappeared.
If something goes wrong
If you cannot access the account, start with Facebook account recovery. If it is compromised, preserve any evidence you need before removing access. For a missing menu or different Meta Account screen, use the official signed-in help route instead of following an unrelated profile's instructions.
Keep a record
Record the profile, selected action, submission date and confirmation. Distinguish a request scheduled for deletion from a completed closure. Keep passwords and security codes out of your notes and SEED support messages.
